Outside Kettlebell Practice – August 9, 2012

The weather today was warm and humid – perfect conditions for some kettlebell practice in the park!

After yesterday’s improved snatch technique I was excited to get back to practice again. I used a 24kg bell at the park and really worked to incorporate all the lessons from yesterday.

One of the biggest improvements was my breathing. In the very beginning of my training I basically just held my breathe as I fought through each rep. Not a solid plan if I wanted to get more than 30-40 reps and probably why I felt like I was going to pass out during the first few tests.

So today I really felt a huge improvement with my new breathing. As I hinge back with the bell more between my legs (like I practiced with the 28kg yesterday) I would exhale. Then as I brought the bell up to the top position I would inhale. Then back into an exhalation again as the bell went back down to the bottom position.

This helped in two ways:

  • Took my mind off of things letting me “zone out” a little and relax, allowing for more reps that also felt easier
  • The bell felt like it floated up to the top without much effort.

All in all, I still need to solidfy my technique but I definitely feel much closer to the 100 rep mark. In fact, the entire time spent outside at the park was maybe 15 minutes – including warmups and cooldown. I was able to hit 100 reps without much trouble. The breakdown was like this:

  • 10/10
  • 15/15
  • 10/10
  • 15/15
  • Done – get lunch

Felt great to leave a quick workout feeling like I had really accomplished something.
